Captain Christopher Pike, Spock, and Number One are set to beam aboard the Enterprise for a new series set ten years before James T. Kirk set foot on the ship. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will continue the exploits of Anson Mount’s Pike started in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. This is good news. The trio upstaged most of the series regulars in Discovery. Mount is perfectly cast as Pike, and both Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romjin proved great as Spock and Number One.
The three actors announced the series in a new video released by CBS. It might be an obvious move for CBS to green light the series, but what makes the new series so enticing is that it will return to Star Trek’s roots.
“We’re going to get to work on a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future,” said Mount. Watch the video below.
Alex Kurtzman, who oversees CBS’ slate of Star Trek shows, including Strange New Worlds, said in a statement: “When we said we heard the fans’ outpouring of love for Pike, Number One, and Spock when they boarded Star Trek: Discovery last season, we meant it. These iconic characters have a deep history in Star Trek canon, yet so much of their stories have yet to be told.”
Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Discovery, Titans) has written the pilot, with a story by Goldsman, Kurtzman, and Jeremy Lumet. These three also act as executive producers alongside Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.
The show’s focus on “optimism and the future” is a classic Star Trek theme. As such, an early release date for this show seems optimistic with current filming restrictions still in place due to Covid-19. However, the wait is sure to be worth it considering what a highlight the trio were in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.
