Jason Momoa Cast as Lobo in the DCU’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Jason Momoa is officially cast as Lobo in James Gunn’s DCU. The actor confirmed his casting in an Instagram post, with a caption that reads: “They called.” Gunn soon confirmed the casting with his own post, including a picture of Lobo smoking a cigar. Lobo will make his debut in 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, opposite fellow Westeros-actor Milly Alcock as the Woman of Steel with Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) directing.

For years, DC fans have promoted Momoa as the ideal person to play the intergalactic bounty hunter. The actor promoted the idea himself as his time as Aquaman came to an end with the DCEU.

Will audiences accept Momoa playing two high profile DC characters in less than a decade? Certainly fan casting seems to confirm they will. In recent years, fans have dictated the casting of an important character in one other franchise: Star Wars. Rosario Dawson was cast as Ahsoka Tano based on the suggestions of fans. And certainly there has been no problem casting Aaron Taylor-Johnson as both Quicksilver in Avengers: The Age of Ultron and Kraven the Hunter. Nor did anyone complain that Russell Crowe played Superman’s father, Jor-El, in Man of Steel and Zeus in the MCU.

Momoa, however, is probably more suited to play Lobo than Aquaman. His resemblance to Lobo is uncanny, like he was born to play the role. His personality also seems to be a good fit for the character, known for wisecracking one-liners, though Lobo’s comments are often laced with profanity.

Lobo first appeared in DC Comics in 1983, but Momoa’s interpretation will likely follow Lobo’s reinvention in the early 1990s as a space biker mercenary. This Lobo is like a heavy metal alien exhibiting all the traits of a biker gang member in outer space. Lobo became a popular DC character with his own comic series that kicked off in 1990 that became a feature of the DC Comic universe.

Momoa won’t be the first live-action Lobo. Emmett J. Scanlan played the intergalactic bounty hunter in the short-lived Syfy show Krypton. But the Hawaiian actor is best-placed to turn Lobo into a DCU fan favorite, and certainly is tested as a star capable of carrying a film over a billion dollars in revenue. Aquaman mad $1.1 billion at the box office, and was the only DCEU film to reach a billion. It makes sense to include him in the new DCU.

Supergirl: World of Tomorrow arrives with Lobo on June 26, 2026.
