‘Superman & Lois’ Renewed For Second Season
Superman & Lois is renewed for a second season after a stonking ratings win with its very first episode last Tuesday. Primetime numbers reveal the show’s debut is The CW’s most-watched episode in over two years and also brought in the network’s best one-day streaming digits for a new show.
“The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman and Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work, and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment,” said Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and CEO, The CW Network. “We are thrilled to now have two brand-new bonafide hits in Superman and Lois and Walker, both of which have been renewed for next season along with 11 other of our shows, further positioning us for continued strength and stability for next season.”
This is a big win for Berlanti Productions, which produces Superman & Lois in conjunction with Warner Bros. Television. The show’s numbers are a well-needed shot in the arm after the disappointing viewership for Batwoman and Supergirl. Supergirl, which is on its final season, dropped in the ratings with each successive season. Despite introducing Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman into the Arrowverse, Supergirl’s drop in popularity had no effect on Superman & Lois, which demonstrates the enduring nature of the Man of Steel.
The latest spinoff in the Arrowverse actually feels like a standalone series. The series has a darker tone and cinematic cinematography than the series than the rest of the Arrowverse. Could this mean a new approach for the future of the CW DC shows? With news that The CW and HBOMax are teaming up to bring more DC shows, the tone and production quality could be leaning more towards Titans and Doom Patrol than The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Time will tell, but at least we know that Superman and Lois Lane will be with us for the foreseeable future.
