Justice League: Zack Snyder Discusses His Battle With Warner Bros. In New Interview
The long-await is almost over for Snyder fans. In less than a month, Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released on HBO Max.
In anticipation of the four-hour event film’s arrival, Vanity Fair has released a must-read interview with Zack Snyder.
The article covers Snyder’s journey to finally finish and release his vision of Justice League, aided by the rallying cries of Snyder fans everywhere. The ‘Release the Snyder Cut’ movement is akin to an Occupy Hollywood movement. And for Snyder fans–and Snyder himself–this movement has paid off.
The recent release of the official trailer teases a completely different movie to Joss Whedon’s Justice League. And fans hope it will erase all memory of the 2017 theatrical release.
In the article, Snyder talks candidly about the tragic loss of his daughter, and the battle with Warner Bros. to let him complete his vision. He also reveals the original concepts he had for the film (including a Batman / Lois Lane romance), and how he took no money for the production. The DCEU, as most are already aware, is a labor of love for the director. No one could fault his enthusiasm, though many fault his execution–Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice remains a divisive film between diehard Snyder fans and almost every other DC fan.
Still, WB did not help with their disastrous theatrical cut of BvS, a stunt they pulled again on Justice League. This leads to the biggest revelation in the article. In early discussions with Snyder, Warner Bros. suggested just releasing the unfinished rough footage stored on Snyder’s laptop. Unsurprisingly, he rejected this idea.
I was like, ‘That’s a no, that’s a hard no.’ And they’re like, ‘But why? You can just put up the rough cut.’” Snyder went on to add, “I go, ‘Here’s why. Three reasons: One, you get the internet off your back, which is probably your main reason for wanting to do this. Two, you get to feel vindicated for making things right, I guess, on some level. And then three, you get a shitty version of the movie that you can point at and go, ‘See? It’s not that good anyway. So maybe I was right.’ I was like, No chance. I would rather just have the Snyder cut be a mythical unicorn for all time.
There are plenty of other reveals in the article. So, rather than spoiling it, read the entire article at Vanity Fair.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will debut on March 18 on HBO Max in the U.S. and in other places on other HBO and HBO-affiliated platforms.
