Liam Hemsworth Replaces Henry Cavill As The Witcher After Superman Announcement

Henry Cavill announced via Instagram that he is “laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4” of The Witcher. The in demand actor will focus his attention on Superman. And in a surprise bit of casting, Thor’s brother, Liam Hemsworth, will step in replace him as Geralt of Rivia for season 4 onwards.

The always gracious Cavill noted his “enthusiasm” for Liam Hemsworth’s take on the character:

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.

Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Hemsworth released a statement via Netflix Tudum noting that “as a Witcher fan, [he’s] over the moon” to step into Cavill’s shoes.

“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Cavill Will Focus on Superman

Cavill’s exit follows his return as Superman. After his surprise cameo in the mid-credits scene of Black Adam, Cavill confirmed he was back as Superman for new movies including at least one standalone film. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz. Cavill enthused on Superman’s “bright future” in the newly rebranded DCU.

Leaving Netflix’s popular show teases a significant role for Superman in the DCU, which was confirmed by James Gunn. Superman is one of the five main characters the DCU will focus on. Cavill is yet to sign a contract, and the terms of his new contract may include leaving The Witcher to focus on Superman fulltime.

Cavill’s final season as Geralt of Rivia–season three–will drop on Netflix in Summer 2023.
