Sasha Calle is DC Universe’s Supergirl

The superhero roster in The Flash movie has a new addition.

The film’s director Andy Muschetti broke the news on Instagram. Sasha Calle (Young and the Restless) beat out hundreds of hopefuls for the coveted role of Kara-El a.k.a. Supergirl.

“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role,” said Muschietti.

Up until now, there had been no word of Supergirl’s inclusion in the film. And there is still no word if her Kryptonian cousin will make an appearance. Henry Cavill, whose star is shining right now after his role as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, sorely needs to return as Superman. Fans have already commented that Supergirl will probably get her own trilogy before Cavill gets to return for another solo outing as the Man of Tomorrow.

Still, Calle is a welcome addition. Watch Muschetti and Sasha Calle via DC Comics’ Twitter feed below.

According to Deadline, the actresses who auditioned didn’t know which role they were applying for until the end of the audition. Then a select number of them did chemistry tests with Ezra Miller via Zoom calls.

The Flash will set up DC’s multiverse. It will most likely follow DC Comics’ Flashpoint storyline, though without Superman, Thomas Wayne, and with the addition of supergirl it is likely to diverge from the storyline considerably. It seems more than likely that we’ll see a transition from Ben Affleck to Michael Keaton’s Batman, rather than Thomas Wayne.

And Calle’s Supergirl may replace Superman in the Flashpoint narrative. In the comic, Superman has been incarcerated in a subterranean prison since he arrived on Earth. Without contact with Earth’s yellow Sun, Kal-El is weak, and deathly thin, until he is finally released. It does seem like an interesting way to introduce Supergirl since the man of Steel already exists in the DCEU.

Calle played Lola Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, for which she won a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2020 for

Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama Series.

The Flash is set to hit theaters on Nov. 4, 2022.
